1st April 2010 - Polar Ben![]() Nearly ten thousand kilometres north of the Amazon, just off the coast of Canada, Ben Saunders, my old mate, is in a pickle. He's been attempting to break the speed record to reach the North Pole
on foot. Only three days in, a fuel bottle cracked and leaked kerosene
over the specialist polar rations. 70% were spoiled. The Arctic's
seasonal window of opportunity is so small that Ben has had to call off
the expedition and book his flight home. Cho's and my big decision today was whether sardines en croute would work over the fire. We've brought flour with us on this leg and are pushing back the boundaries of expedition pastry-making. As Ben would say, "Grrrr!". ![]() Ben had to chuck in his
last attempt in 2008 due to a cracked ski
binding. It has taken him two years of recovering, reorganising and
re-sponsoring to get this current attempt off the ground. Right now
Ben's whole life revolves around this and it would seem that it has
gone wrong for him... again. Join us on 22nd April for the next installment and don't forget to check out our new Question of the Week video - and send in your questions to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it !
