Walking the Amazon: Ed's Amazon Adventure Blog

The Story So Far...

Ed StaffordEd Stafford is an explorer. Like Captain Scott of the Antarctic and Sir Ranulph Fiennes before him, he has a passion for discovering and learning about the vast planet that we all live on. Today, so many of the great expeditions have already been done by explorers of the past. There are no longer many things that people can do and say, "I was the first person in the world to do that!" 3rd December 2009 - Scratched and Confused

The petrol company road that Cho and I had been heading for turned out to be an oil pipeline. I had misread Google and instead of arriving at a clean road cut through the jungle, Cho and I arrived at a vast pipeline carrying oil to the refineries.

This was a double blow for Cho and me. Instead of moving fast on the road, we ended up fighting through the dense re-growth that had occurred since the pipeline was installed a few years ago.

Razor grass was the most common plant – scratching our legs and arms as we tried to follow the pipeline.

After four days in the blistering heat following the pipeline Cho and I decided that we needed to change our plan and we caught a speedboat with some oil workers to the nearby town of Coari. In the town we bought food and medicines for the journey.

After resting for a few days we are now heading back to the pipeline. But we are not planning to follow it any longer. We have decided to head east through the cooler, green shade under the rainforest canopy – where we feel most at home.
