Imagine the scene in Star Wars where Luke Skywalker meets Yoda for the first time. Too young to have seen Star Wars? Then imagine a garden that's been left to overgrow for fifty years and has been flooded with about a foot of black water. Vines and thorns have grown everywhere in a tangle of prison-like confusion - and the water smells like the garbage when the kitchen bin has been left overflowing too long.

What lurks under the black water? Anacondas - the biggest snakes in the world that crush their victims to death with their huge muscular bodies - and electric eels that can knock a man out with the shock that they give. The men then drown.

So far Cho and I have been lucky. We've seen one viper swimming very close to us - but it was scared of us and hurried away. A good thing too as their venom can kill a person very quickly.

The waters are still low enough to make seven kilometers a day. That's good for Cho and me. Finger crossed it will last.
