19th November 2009 - Oil Under the JungleAt the moment Cho and I are chopping through the Amazon towards a road cut by an oil company. Most people know that oil comes from under the ground. It’s called a fossil fuel as it is the result of the breakdown of materials under the ground over thousands and thousands of years.  You may know that oil comes from the Middle East under the desert, but did you also know that oil is also found under the rainforest? Have a look on Google Earth to see where we are now and to see where petrol is being taken from the forest. Our current location (use this format on Google Earth): 4°14’30.61’’S 64°21’25.42’’W The road is at: 4°20’52.95’’S 64°7’1.22’’W The oil is being taken at from the Amazon at: 4°52’15.52’’S 54°4’57.50’’W Every road that is built into the Amazon allows people to come in and cut down trees. learning about the vast planet that we all live on. Today, so many of
the great expeditions have already been done by explorers of the past.
There are no longer many things that people can do and say, "I was the
first person in the world to do that!"
