Walking the Amazon: Ed's Amazon Adventure Blog

The Story So Far...

Ed StaffordEd Stafford is an explorer. Like Captain Scott of the Antarctic and Sir Ranulph Fiennes before him, he has a passion for discovering and learning about the vast planet that we all live on. Today, so many of the great expeditions have already been done by explorers of the past. There are no longer many things that people can do and say, "I was the first person in the world to do that!" The video below tells the story of the first part of the week...

But then yesterday, when Cho and I reached the Paru River, the logging road suddenly, and unexpectedly, stopped.

Loggers in the AmazonUnder normal circumstances we'd have been more than happy with this news - but after taking local advice we'd now stored our heavy jungle kit: boots, boats, paddles and fishing gear, everything that we hadn't thought necessary for the road. We sometimes do this - send parcels of spare stuff down the river from place to place - spare satellite phones, tape stock etc. So we were very unprepared for what lay ahead...

With Cho in Jesus sandals and me in Crocs, we headed into the trees feeling somewhat naked and vulnerable. I would never advise anyone to enter the jungle in such footwear - we've been slipping lots and getting huge thorns in our feet. Any river will have to be swum now, using our packs to float across. As we've slowed down to jungle pace we will have to make our two days of rations last five days.

Holey Crocs! This is written on Wednesday night and we've just finished our half-ration supper of soup and one lonely sardine! With batteries low too, I feel like Cho  and I have been well and truly caught napping this week.
