Cho was still in pain when he started fishing at 2:30pm. I'd offered to end the day's walking early due to his accident but he was keen not to be stopped by his wound and so he duly fished.

I made supper, our tiny ration of rice and beans with black coffee, and called him to come but he asked for it to be put in his tupperware as he would eat it later.

I went to bed as it got dark around 6:20pm having eaten alone. I read in my cosy, dry den inside my mosquito net. At 8pm I had just finished my book when I saw Cho's head-torch bobbing through the trees back to the fire embers.

"We have supper!" he cried and slapped down a big catfish with a grin that I could not see in the dark but knew was there. It had taken him five and a half hours of unsuccessful fishing to land his prize. I got up, gutted and cooked the catfish whilst Cho washed in the river.

As we ate I complimented Cho on his remarkable patience. It had given us both an injection of protein we've needed for several days. He shrugged it off in his usual way, but personally I found it to be dedication verging on lunacy. His own way of dealing with the boredom of walking with a very heavy pack every day I suppose.

Never would I have stuck at it that long with a severely cut hand in the dark. But then I wouldn't have eaten a fish supper would I? Cho is a great man to be walking with.
