Walking the Amazon: Ed's Amazon Adventure Blog

The Story So Far...

Ed StaffordEd Stafford is an explorer. Like Captain Scott of the Antarctic and Sir Ranulph Fiennes before him, he has a passion for discovering and learning about the vast planet that we all live on. Today, so many of the great expeditions have already been done by explorers of the past. There are no longer many things that people can do and say, "I was the first person in the world to do that!" What is wrong with Cho?

Since Cho was a bit sick (see video above), lots of dried up riverbeds have had Cho and me waiting under the puniest of jungle vines for a few drops of life-giving liquid. We’ve searched for water like oil companies trying to savage the Amazon of its fossil fuels, probing and digging as we go.

Puny vines give little thirst quenching     Cho searching for water under the ground

Ed and his BGANThankfully the dry season does not mean no rain – just lower waters – so we’ve been saved by an evening thunderstorm on more than one occasion and are now very quick with our improvised water collection bags.

A guest blog that I wrote recently for budding adventurer, Kev Shannon, has just been published on his site. It’s about expedition gadgets and how I am in love with these amazing bits of kit.

Of course whilst I was writing I already knew that my GPS didn’t work, one of the Sony video cameras had gone down and the Macbook’s mouse had started behaving very funnily.  Now the Internet phone, our connection to the outside world, is starting to go wrong and we have sent for our backup phone to be flown in from deepest darkest Peru.

If we were totally dependent on these bits of kit for survival we’d be starting to feel the hot beads of sweat run down our grimy foreheads. But the truth is that Cho and I can push on without them if needed. We just revert to how they used to do it in the good old days – with a map and compass.

Cho and I agree to disagree over our location

Recently we’ve been seeing a lot more of the largest animal in South America – the black caiman.

It's like Brighton Pier
