Quest 1: Climate Change: A G8 Conference Address

 Focus:

Climate change: a G8 conference address

 Objective:

To produce and deliver a 15-minute speech as the British Prime Minister to the G8 conference on the subject of climate change.

Product Success Criteria:

  • The speech will be delivered by a student in the role of the British Prime Minister.

  • Using researched material it will address the following questions:

    1. What is the current situation?

    2. What are the consequences of non-intervention in the short, medium and long term?

    3. What action is proposed?

    4. What is new about these proposals?

  • How would you fight the case for including rainforests in a climate change strategy?

Organisation:

  • Students to work in groups – with, for example, researchers, speech writers and a prime minister

  • Individually to produce a piece of work

Development:

  • Following the speeches, invite feedback and questions from teachers and students

  • Provide constructive criticism on the feasibility of the proposals

  • Advocate an argument on behalf of a lobby group that does not share The Prime Minister’s view

  • Research the work of Eco-Schools (see link below). What impact do you think such organisations have on climate change?

  • Should your school become an Eco-School?

  • Compare and contrast the two current climate change-orientated sustainable schools programmes:

    1. The Pod for Greener Learning www.jointhepod.org

    2. Generation Green http://www.generationgreen.org.uk/
  • Research the work of The Prince’s Rainforests Project. What are they trying to do? How do strategic partnerships support their work? What would you do if you were in their position?
