Picture cards of rainforest creatures (se EYFS Quest 1 for some relevant templates)

Activity:

Children are each handed a card depicting a rainforest creature. They have to pretend to be this creature. Make sure that they are familiar with:

• Their creature’s colouring/markings
• Its habitat
• Its diet
• Whether it is nocturnal or diurnal

The adult plays the crocodile’s role. An area is marked out as the river. All the children stand to one side of the river with the crocodile at the other. All together they ask the crocodile: “Please Mr Crocodile  can we cross your river today?” The crocodile replies giving various criteria, eg:

• Only if you live in the canopy/understorey/floo
• Come out during the day/night
• Can fly/swim
• Have spotty markings, etc

Only the animals which fit the criteria are allowed to cross the river and join the crocodile. The last remaining creature is ‘eaten’ by the crocodile. The game is repeated with children in the role of the crocodile.
